Key Budapest stores feature in new Europe-wide bakery guide
Launched today, ‘Europe’s Best Bakeries’ highlights more than 130 shops, stores, cafés and confectioneries in 25 countries. Of the classic and contemporary selections from Dublin to Oslo, four have been chosen from Budapest, including Gerbeaud and Pékműhely.
Just issued by UK-based September Publishing, Europe’s Best Bakeries has been put together by Sarah Guy, previously responsible for the encyclopaedic annual Time Out Guide to Eating and Drinking in London. While UK bread and cake shops account for nearly a third of this colourful, fully illustrated edition, a fair slice is given over to Europe.
Each Budapest entry has a different focus. For Auguszt, full background is given on the incredible history of the hardy dynasty behind it. Gerbeaud barely needs any introduction but is given a detailed one anyway, while József Vajda of Pékműhely describes his quest for superior sourdough with notable dedication and passion.
Bakeries and confectioneries around the region, in Prague, Austria, Croatia and Poland, are also featured, as well as famed institutions in Paris, Amsterdam and Rome.
