For one night only – cult Budapest bar Vittula hosts hedonistic photo show

A fitting venue for the theme, cellar bar Vittula is staging an exhibition of photos showing the wild side of Budapest nightlife. Running Saturday night only, ’Notorious Reflexes’ goes by an English-language title and showcases the work of international photographers swept up in the city’s hedonistic wave. Surf-rock acts The Keeyman and the Panel Surfers star among the accompanying performers for this one-off event.

The very epitome of a dive bar, the wondrous Vittula at the gateway to Budapest’s party zone has always attracted a mixed Magyar and international crowd. The favoured haunt of Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence during her notorious stay in Budapest, the Vittula has seen them all come and go since opening 15 years ago.

During that time, Vittula regular Kristóf Erdődy has taken more than half a million photographs of Budapest’s underground scene, capturing its characters and stolen moments. Of aristocratic Hungarian stock from Transylvania, Erdődy spent many years in Germany before arriving here to pick up on Budapest’s cult bars and clubs. This Saturday night gives Erdődy the chance to present his images to the public for the first time.

Also being exhibited are photos by Leroy Drevdal, who came here from Norway four years ago to record the activities of local activists. He quickly fell in with city’s after-dark netherworld, which provided him and his cameras with no end of subject matter.

After an introduction by UK-born visual artist Martha Kicsiny, there will be a solo set by T Bali (aka composer/performer Balázs Temesvári) before the sassy sounds of surf rock from The Keeymen of Balaton and the Panel Surfers from Tatabánya Beach.
