A wine list spanning Hungary, Europe and the New World is creating a buzz around District IX of Budapest, a few blocks from the Mester utca stop of the busy tram 4/6 route along the Grand Boulevard. Started as an online store for community purchase, Fill the Winebox has just opened its first bricks-and-mortar business, where drinks are also available for sampling. This boutique bar is committed to showcasing countries from around the world, such as Chile and Portugal, through their wines.

What started as a web-based venture for wine by a trio of local oenophiles has become one of Budapest’s latest boutique hangouts. Going beyond its digital remit, Fill the Winebox now offers varieties to be sampled and purchased at a spacious new outlet on Ferenc tér.

Open for testing out might be a creamy Rocim Amphora from the Portuguese Herdade winery or a Tournon Shiraz from Australia.

But this operation is not only about deep-hued reds. Whites and rosés also feature, rare finds and revered tipples that are not prevalent in Hungary. You’ll find local libations, too.

And when it comes to deeper understanding about the drinks, you’ll get just the right amount of information from the staff. A visit here provides beginners with an easy-to-grasp wine guide, while connoisseurs can get a decent understanding of a given winery outside Hungary’s borders.
