A new riverside hangout to open in Budapest for the summer

A vast neglected riverside space near Budapest’s red Rákóczi Bridge is being transformed into a summertime hotspot. By day, Valyo Kikötő will host art festivals, cultural events, workshops and community attractions, as well as family-friendly and sport events. After dark, concerts, film screenings, theater shows and other cool nocturnal attractions will entertain the crowds. This new community hub, a former dock area, will be able to accommodate 300-500 people at any one time. Summertime carousing is set to start on May 1st, to close on September 30th, if all goes according to plan.

The founding honchos of this cool new project are Valyo, a nonprofit organization of enthusiastic young people aiming to better integrate the river into the lives of locals. They strive to improve access to the Danube embankment and highlight underused stretches of urban waterfront. Their most popular initiative to date is running the summertime Liberty Bridge picnics and now they try to bring new colors into next summer, too. They have found an area of nearly 1,000 square meters by Rákóczi Bridge, a former dock neglected for years. Seeing an opportunity, they are now trying to turn this space into the coolest alfresco hangout for the summer.

Valyo’s aim is to find a venue for the abundance of open-air events in the warmer months. During the day, Valyo Kikötő will accommodate art, cultural events, workshops, and community and sporting activities, with live music, cinema and theater taking over come nightfall. There is a sense that Budapest has the enviable resource of a river running through it, something that needs to be better exploited by integrating the Danube into the lives of residents. Between March 1st and 30th, and April 15th and 30th, building workshops will be set up here and, if all goes according to plan, Valyo Kikötő will be providing summer entertainment to one and all from May 1st until September 30th.

How to get there: on your bike or take tram 1, 2 or 24. And until summer comes, you can daydream about this new party hub from Valyo’s mobile sauna currently parking on the same spot.
