The Museum of Fine Arts (Szépművészeti Múzeum) was built in eclectic neoclassical style on the basis of plans by Albert Schickedanz and Fülöp Herzog, on the northwestern side of Heroes' Square, opposite to the Art Gallery, between 1900 and 1906. The museum's collection consists mostly of international works of art, including over 120 000 pieces from all periods of European art by the likes of RaffaelloEl GrecoToulouse-LautrecChagallVelázquezRembrandtTiepoloGoyaManetMonet and Cézanne - to mention but a few. The pieces originate from various locations, like the Buda Castle or the estates of noble families like the Esterhazys and Zichys, and some were donations from private collections. The museum is divided into six major collections: Egyptian Art, Classical Antiquities, Sculpture, Old Master Paintings, Department of Art after 1800, and Prints and Drawings.
