6 events we’re looking forward to during Budapest Design Week

During 2016’s Budapest Design Week events – happening from Friday, September 23rd through Sunday, October 2nd – Hungary’s capital will become a gigantic showroom of Magyar-made fashion, furniture, artworks, architecture, and much more, all on display at various venues citywide, ranging from major museums to hidden ateliers. We browsed through the schedule of nearly 120 exciting Design Week events and picked out six programs that any fan of aesthetics and innovation would hate to miss.

The last week of September is all about design in Budapest. The organizers of Budapest Design Week sorted the programs into different categories by genres, so that everyone can pick the events that interest them most among the wide assortment of exciting activities. There will be fashion shows, exhibits, workshops, discussions, performances, and many internationally renowned special guests. While many of the programs are best enjoyed by people who speak Hungarian, the following six events can be appreciated by everyone.

The special guests of this year’s Design Week are the countries of the Visegrad Group: Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia. The event’s opening exhibition – “Central Values – Common Heritage in Central European Contemporary Design” – showcases the freshest and most exciting works of contemporary designers from these four countries, placing special emphasis on shared cultural traditions and common inspirational sources. This exhibit also features several special events, so it is recommended to make your way towards the Museum of Applied Arts many times during Budapest Design Week.

Visegrad Design Fair at WAMP

Budapest’s favorite design fair celebrates its 10th birthday this year, and to honor this anniversary the organizers are preparing a truly special program for Design Week guests. Besides a huge selection of Hungarian design artists, the works of Czech, Polish, and Slovakian designers will also shine here, all of which can be bought on the spot. We can expect a colorful cavalcade of handcrafted goods and affordable prices.

“LAONI – FUTURE VISION” sustainable-design exhibition

Eco-friendly design is one of the most exciting aspects of contemporary object design work, uniting various views and trends. This exhibit aims to display the importance of conscious market behavior as an essential step on the way leading to a viable future. An exciting Budapest store – founded by a designer – prepares a progressive selection, featuring Studio Swine’s Sea Chair, Ariane Prin’s ceramics, PAPER UP!’s special paper works, and the brand-new clothing collection of WYHOYS.

“Handmade Dreams – Contemporary Czech Fashion Jewelery”

Czech fashion jewelry has been an essential element on the market of quality bijoux since the 18th century. The terms “Bijoux de Boheme” and “Jablonex” fall into the high-quality category all over the world. This exhibition focuses on the contemporary aspects of this historical genre. It is a must for jewelry lovers!

“Hungarian Design – In its Parts and in its Entirety”

This exhibit features a special selection of the freshest furniture designs of local studios. At PDSIGN Studio the works of CODOLAGNI, András Kerékgyártó, MOHA design, and PDSIGN are introduced. The exhibited objects connect with each other, presenting a new perspective, thus proving that Hungarian design is exciting, fresh, and competitive on an international level. Besides admiring the exhibits, visitors will also have the chance to meet the designers.

“Wearable Technologies”

Memory brooches, illuminating reflex mirrors, acoustic Budapest memorials; digital object creations, manipulated materials, interactive graphics, and audio and image processing. “Wearable Technologies” features the works of the MOME Design and Art Department’s students, presenting thought-provoking ideas reflecting on individual and collective memories.
