Today's new is a series of video screenings fortified by Q&A. Traditionally followed by Open Mic followed by The Contest.
The SPB evening starts with an informal meeting of the crew members where relevant issues concering the club can be talked through thoroughly. Then a whole new project retrospective called Slam Culture kicks off with the purpose of extending the Hungarian public’s knowledge and understanding about the evolution of spoken word and performance poetry. Slam Culture started out as a research trip by BlyWorx last year to New York and Chicago to explore the slam scenes in the US, during which a bunch of videos were made, including interviews and slam events, which will be gradually exposed at the club event, combined with Q&A sessions.
This evening the discussion revolves around the topics of the video-interview with all-time slam guru Bob Holman – his first encounter with poetry, his visit to Hungary, the beginnings of slam, the Nuyorican, the Bowery, slam and music, slam and hip-hop and all the rest coming up naturally. The discussion is followed by an Open Mic which is followed by the decisive Contest. All this in the company of distinguished personalities of the ever-growing Hungarian slam community.
Signing up is open to anyone, but there are certain rules to obey, generally following the American pattern: Sign-up is compulsory, happens strictly between 6-8pm at the venue on the day of the event. One cannot sign up for both the Open Mic and the Contest. Slam virgins are strongly recommended to sign up for the Open Mic. There is no theme, no music, and no props are allowed. Work must be of the poet’s original creation. Slammers are encouraged to bring „new sh!t”.
