However road constructions made it pretty adventurous getting here, we managed to visit one of the most popular buffets in Kazinczy St., El Rapido. The first floor is very small, only two miniature tables are placed there, so it's kind of hard to move around, but the warm welcoming makes these problems fade away. The chef was joking all the time, but he is a little forgetful - we had to repeat our orders like three times. While our quesadilla and fajitas was prepared we had the time to look around, it is not only a buffet, but a Mexican grocery store as well, all in one. Numerous imported cans and other original ingredients can be found on the shelves at discount prices and in the fridge you may choose one from a wide selection of Mexican and Latin American wines and beers. I tried a bottle of Cubanero.
The cellar is a lot roomier than upstairs. The walls, the ceiling and the corners are filled with old stuff, just like if you were at a flea market! Ugly porcelain cat for 400, terrifying puppets for the same, big sitting Buddha for 2000... you can buy anything that you like. The place has a true ruin-pub atmosphere, but it’s still homier and more hidden than Szimpla kert next door for example.
Our fajitas was well filled with fresh ingredients and loads of meat. It was very "eatable", I mean, it didn't fall apart it didn't melt, so you may eat it on the street as well if you're in a hurry. Our experience with the quesadilla was just as positive, however its shape makes it more difficult to eat it on the road. The Cuban beer (who knows if it was really Cuban?) was also a very good experience, however it ended as fast as a small bottle of Leffe.
If you're around just hop in for a bite! A gyros prepared at a dirty underpass is not much cheaper either, but for the same money you get here a really tasty and enjoyable dish, and a conversation with the chef may be an experience of a lifetime. We also strongly recommend to come here if you already left for the birthday party, but you still don't have any presents. Choose something funny from the cellar and everybody will love it!
