Szabadság Square (lit. Liberty Square) is the largest and most representative square in the downtown. It can easily be reached from the Parliament, on Kossuth Square. The square has a big park in the middle, popular among locals to hang out or to relax. The square is home to big bank centers, the building of the Hungarian State Television, the American Embassy. Though its name is Liberty Square the World War II Memorial of the “liberating” (then occupying) Soviet troops still stands here, leading to certain controversy. Around the fall of the regime it was planned to tear down the monument, but it remained there as a memento to the war and the following communism.
