The Museum of Fine Arts was built as part of the celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of Hungary's founding and was opened in 1906. This is the biggest and most important museum in the city. After the inauguration of the National Gallery in the Buda Castle, they gave away their Hungarian collection for them, so today the museum hosts masterpieces of the universal art. The building is a good example for the neo-Classicist architecture. Almost every season of the year the museum hosts big guest-exhibitions from Picasso to van Gogh, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. It is considered to be one of the most important museums of Central Europe. 2007 saw the museum joining the elite of museums attracting the most visitors worldwide.

An underground extension of the museum and the building of a new glass entrance under the Heroes' Square in planned to be completed till 2012, almost doubling the exhibition area of the building.
