Mathias Church (along with the Basilica) is the most famous church in Budapest. It was built in 1015, soon after Hungary became a Christian kingdom. In the 14th century it was rebuilt in the late gothic style and in the 19th century the church was considerably restored by Frigyes Schulek.

Today the church is undergoing an exterior reconstruction, to gain back its earlier pomp. The church is a good example of the magnificent Central-European gothic style. With its rich ornamentation, statues and sculptures the church shows a very abundant façade. The interior is dominated by wood, gold and painted walls. Here the traditional style is mixed with the elements of the late 19th century neo-gothic wave.
