The 1956 Memorial Square is approximately a kilometer long mixed-use concrete-covered area featuring the 1956 Monument and the Time-Wheel. The square often hosts big public events, festivals, civil programs, parades and other festivities and celebrations. The monument of the 1956 uprising is the central element of the square, commemorating the thousands of brave Budapesters, who took up arms against soviet oppression. It was unveiled 23 October 2006, the 50th anniversary of the revolution. A couple of steps away stands the Time-Wheel, which is a large hourglass, turning once a year. It started measuring time 1 May 2004, when Hungary joined the European Union.

This is the place where Regnum Marianum church stood until 1951, when the Rákosi-regime ruined the building to have enough space for Felvonulási Square.
