Madách Theatre (Madách Színház) on Erzsébet körút is one of the best known musical theatres in Budapest. In the beginning, the theatre followed the traditions of bourgeois theatre; but it adopted a new, modern direction following the systems change of 1989. Thanks to its spectacular musicals, the Madách Theatre has become one of the trendiest stages of today. Its repertoire is quite wide: in addition to the best known pieces by Webber (like Cats or the Phantom of the Opera), it stages popular international and Hungarian pieces and provides English subtitles for all the shows. Being a respected and popular theatre, it has about 350 performances per year, in front of approximately half a million Hungarian and foreign viewers.
